Different Types of Headphone Designs

There are way too many options available out there when it comes to headphones. Different types of headphones have different designs and are meant for different reasons. However, if you wonder what different types of headphones are available in the market, then I will be talking about different types of headphone designs in this article.

I will talk about all the popular headphones available and why you should get them. So let’s get into the topic right away:

Different Types of Headphone Designs

1. Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones are one of the most common headphones that we get to see. They come with a large earpad that fits your entire ear. Also, these headphones are big in size and come with a headband.

These headphones offer you extreme comfort, and in most cases, they are well padded. Also, since it makes your ears fully enclosed, some over-ear headphone comes with noise cancellation features.

Also, they do offer you excellent sound quality, which feels big and more realistic compared to other headphones. Also, it creates a wider soundstage.

However, if you are getting cheap over-ear headphones, then they won’t be well padded. As a result, you have to deal with aching.

Also, good quality over-ear headphones are extremely expensive. But yes, they are meant for quality sound.

2. On-Ear Headphones

Over-ear and on-ear headphones look pretty much the same. But on-ear headphones have smaller earpads. And they sit on your earlobes.

The good part about them is that they are lightweight and offer you better stability compared to over-ear headphones. Also, they are smaller in size, which makes them easy to carry.

However, they are not so comfortable if the headphones are not well padded. It puts pressure on your earlobes which can be super irritating and painful after a certain time.

3. Earbuds

Next, there are the Earbuds which are also one of the popular headphone types. They are small in size and come in different shapes and sizes. Earbuds are not a single type of headphone like the over-ear headphone. There are different types of earbuds available out there.

However, to help you out, let me talk about them in brief:

(i) True Wireless Earbuds

As you can see in the name, wireless earbuds don’t have any wire. Instead, they come in a charging case which is super portable. They come with a digital to analog converter and digital single process unit, which makes the earbud sound the same regardless of the source.

They do offer great noise isolation and amazing sound quality. Plus, they are also comfortable and come with an ergonomic design.

(ii) The Old Type Of Wireless Earbuds

Apart from the true wireless earbuds, there is also the old style earbuds. These kinda earbuds are wireless in nature but still, you see a wire attached to the earbuds.

They give you good stability and nicely fit in your ear. Plus, it also offers you amazing audio. However, they do take the same space as wired headphones.

(iii) Wired Earbuds

Wired earbuds are now an old thing. But they are still quite popular, and a lot of people prefer them. They come with a wire which connects to the audio source.

Also, these earbuds don’t rely on DSP for tuning and make the sound performance more scalable. Plus, they provide good noise isolation. Moreover, they are super affordable.

But when there is a loose cable, it makes a crippling sound which is super annoying.

(iv) Earphones

Earphones are one of the popular types of earbuds. They sit on the front ear canal and rest on your earlobes. They don’t block your ears and don’t really put any pressure on your ears. As a result, they are super comfy.

However, the sound quality of such headphones isn’t that great. Also, they are not so stable when it sits in your ears.

4. Bone Conduction Headphones

Bone conduction headphones are pretty unique, and they are the new kid in the town. These headphones use bone conducting technology to transmit sound through your cheekbones.

The good part is that they don’t block your ears. So you can be aware of your surroundings. Along with that, they are highly stable as they sit over your ears.

However, the sound quality isn’t that great. Also, as we are still at the early stage of this technology. So at this moment, we cannot expect much from it.

5. Closed-Back Headphones

Closed back headphones can be any type of headphones. Be it on-ear, over-ear, or in-ear with fully closed ear cups.

They offer you great noise isolation and reduce sound leakage. Along with that, it offers an improved bass response. However, they do have a narrow soundstage compared to other types of headphones.

You should consider buying them if you want to enjoy music in a noisy environment. For instance, during traveling or office space.

6. Open Back Headphones

These kinds of headphones come with semi or fully open earcups. Headphone drivers are usually visible and protected with a wire mesh. However, thanks to their natural sound, they are loved by many audiophiles.

The open back design prevents sound from feeling trapped inside the cups. Also, they help your ear breathe. But they lack noise isolation, and sound leakage is one of the biggest issues.

But thanks to their open sound, you would love them as an audiophile. They are an ideal pick for music producers. As they offer true quality sound.

7. Wireless Headphones

Wireless earbuds and wireless headphones are almost the same things. They come with all the necessary components built into the headphone housing.

They are amazingly good when it comes to portability and offers you amazing sound. You will find both over-ear and on-ear wireless headphones in the market.

However, the cheap quality headphones fail to offer you good battery backup. So you need to charge the headphones frequently.

8. Wired Headphones

Wired headphones used to be a thing in the past. However, in today’s time, they are mostly ignored by general users. But audiophiles love them. They do offer good quality sound and come under budget pricing.

However, one of the biggest drawbacks is cable noise. If your cable rubs against your clothes or skin, it makes a crippling sound.

Also, most devices have avoided adding the 3.55mm jack. As a result, in today’s time, wired headphones are not compatible with most devices.

9. Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Lastly, there are active noise-canceling headphones. These headphones are meant for blocking surrounding noise. So you can focus on the sound.

They offer great noise isolation and create a unique experience for you. They also come in pretty handy when you are traveling or trying to enjoy music in a noisy environment.

But they are pretty expensive in nature. A good quality noise cancellation headphone can cause above $300. Also, if you are going for a cheap pick, you will have to compromise on the sound and battery life.
