How To Choose Best Food Processor In India
The food processor is arguably the most versatile and useful tool you can have in your kitchen. It saves an enormous amount of time when it comes to preparing food, and helps you do a variety of tasks such as slicing, grinding, chopping, shredding, and lots more. It makes preparing food a breeze and lets you focus your energy on more important things.
Food processors can prepare a wide range of foods, including nuts, fruits, meats, dough, vegetables, etc. Whether you’re making a salad, baking bread, or a delicious salsa, the food processor will help you much.
They can also be quite helpful for menial kitchen tasks related to cooking. For example, don’t you hate chopping onions? The food processor will do that for you, no problem. Many food processors come with different work bowl and blade sizes, so you don’t have to use a large bowl for small, manageable tasks.
1. What To Consider Before Buying A Food Processor
There are a few things you should consider before you go out and buy a food processor. First of all, you need to discuss your requirements regarding capacity. Do you often cook for a lot of people, or do you usually just cook for 1 or 2? My recommendation is to always go with a slightly bigger model than you think you need, so you don’t have to feel limited later on.
You also need to figure out how much power you need. The power of the motor is measured in watts and is usually between 300 and 1000 watts. How much you need depends on the jobs you’re planning to use it for. For example, making bread dough requires a lot more power than mixing liquids.
There are other things to consider as well, as the ease of use, how difficult it is to clean, and what accessories are available. Not to mention the quality and durability of it, which you can often get a feel for by reading user reviews on Amazon from people who have had their food processor for a few years.
I will provide some quick tips here about how to choose a food processor. You will be using the food processor a lot in your kitchen if you cook regularly, so make sure you want the right one that will help you save a lot of meal preparation time. I find that it is easier and less confusing if you think about choosing a food processor in this order:
1. Size – First things first. How much food do you usually prepare? For 1 – 3 persons, get a small food processor; 4 – 6 persons a medium one, and a large one if you’re cooking for more than 7 persons. You can find my list of food processors according to cup size here.
2. Power – How much will you use it? Higher power or wattage will make food processing faster and more efficient for heavy use. But if you’re not looking for a heavy-duty machine, there’s no need to spend more for the extra power.
3. Versatility and extras – Would you like the food processor to do other stuff like juicing or blending? Do you want different size bowls and blades for flexibility in meal size? More isn’t always good news, especially when it means a load on the price tag, so make sure the extras bring you value if you’re paying for them.
After narrowing down your choices, make sure your food processor also has these features:
- Sharp stainless steel blades
- A variety of slicing/shredding disks
- A large feed tube or chute
- Nonslip and sturdy base
- Safety locking features
- A good warranty
2. Best Food Processor Types
I have used and reviewed a lot of good food processors, and here are the reviews of my top-rated food processors:
- Best Food Processor – Best food processor! High powered, spacious work bowl, easily clean with Clean Touch Control Pad.
- Best Medium Food Processor – Medium size food processor for medium size family. Small footprint but the strong motor, with two feed tubes of different sizes.
- Best Small Food Processor – Ideal for small jobs, with separate compartments to process wet or dry items.
- Best Large Food Processor – Extra large, right size of tubes to minimize the need to cut. Virtually shatterproof Lexan work bowl.
- Best High Power Food Processor – High wattage for faster work process and with many types of blades for a variety of tasks.
1. Processor Capacity:-
The main food processor bowl should not be anything smaller than 1.4litres incapacity, and the range can reach up to 3litres. Think about what sort of jobs you would use the processor for most of the time, and choose the model based on the criteria. Although this criterion may not be 100% accurate, it does give you a picture of your choice. For example, if you are a family of only 4 people, how often would you need a 3litre capacity bowl?
Do not go for anything that is NOT stainless steel. Most processors offer a variety of blades for different tasks such as blending, chopping, grating, julienne, slicing. It is more value for money if the machine comes with many blades, for it is versatile and is so handy.
3. Wattage –
The wattage varies from 400W to 1100W or more. A higher wattage would speed up the process and be more suitable for heavy usage. You would surely want a machine that is capable of handling any job you wish to, therefore choose the most powerful model that your budget can cover. Alternatively, aim to own one that is at least 750W or higher.
Think long term. Some processors give you the versatility of juicing as well, while some have a bullet blender that enables carrying out different tasks at the same time. This is exceptionally time-efficient, and although at first look, this processor is pricier, in the long run, it will be worth it because you won’t need other gadgets.
5. Safety Features:-
Basic features are inter-locking and non-slip feet. Check to see if the model of your choice has these features; of course, more safety virtues provide peace of mind.
I would say that for any budget, there is a processor suitable; of course, it is you get what you pay for. For domestic usage, models usually range from $50 to $200 (about RM 200- RM 800). It is advisable to invest in a more expensive one as it gives you more functions and is more durable.
Each manufacturer has its warranty duration. Make sure you are confident of the brand’s reputation, especially if you have never bought anything from this brand before. It is better if the manufacturer offers a replacement warranty.
So it’s come to that time again when your food processor is on its last legs, and you desperately need to replace it with a brand new shiny model.
Luckily for you, in today’s online e-commerce world, you have thousands of devices to choose from. No longer are you forced to shop in your local town? You can purchase from anywhere you like and rely on postage and shipping to do the rest.
The price will usually be the first factor that you consider when trying to buy the best food processor. Depending on what you can afford, you will often find that the better models come with a higher price tag.
You will find models that range from $60 up to $600.
From personal experience, though, I wouldn’t pay any more than $350 for a new food processor. I’m sure a $600 machine will be a great device, but I just don’t think it is necessary to pay that much.
With today’s competitive online market, there are some real bargains to be found if you do your research.
As a rule of thumb, I try to stay in the 1000 rupees- 5000 rupees range when buying a device like a new food processor.
Yes there are some cheaper models out there, but take my word for it, these models will not last long, and before you know it, you will be back online where you started.
9. Customer Feedback:-
Reading what other people think is a significant step in your purchasing decision. With forums and review sites, you have the necessary resources to find customer feedback at the click of just a few buttons.
Make sure you do your homework and visit at least one site that offers you food processor reviews. You will be very grateful you did because people are always keen to share their experiences with you, whether they are good or bad.
Just reading a few simple reviews can save you wasting your money and buying an inferior product. Make sure you buy a model that at least has a 4 out of 5-star rating. Any less will mean that the feedback is usually a mixed bag and that the product should be avoided.
This may sound like an obvious one, but you would be amazed how often people will buy a food processor that either lacks the features they need or has way more features than they need.
If you are going to be shelling out your hard-earned money on a new device for your kitchen, make sure you are buying something that will do what you want it to do.
How often are you planning on using your food processor? Once a week, three times a week, or daily? Decide on this factor first and then determine what kind of features you are looking for.
Does your device need to be machine washable because you are going to be using it every day, or are you not too fussed about cleaning it yourself? Should your device have multiple speeds because you are going to be preparing elaborate dishes, or are you merely going to be using it for now and again for the kid’s food? Make sure you know what features you are looking for before you make that all-important purchase.
Power is one of the most important aspects of a good food processor. A well-powered processor will give you smooth and consistent results. An inadequately powered food processor will lead to uneven results.
To sum it up, a weak food processor could make more work for you instead of less.
So make sure you buy a powerful enough food processor. All the processors I review on my site have been proven to be very powerful.
The only inconvenience when you have a powerful processor is that it will be more substantial than more weak machines. But it will also be able to deliver better results. The extra weight also adds to the stability of the processor, lessening or eliminating shaking while in use.
Customer reviews come handy when you are trying to find the best food processor for you. Another way to gauge the reliability of a specific food processor is through the reputation of the maker.
13. Making Decision
To make a decision more accessible for you, I have listed some food processors for you down below. These processors have all the good qualities mentioned above. Based on my experiment and customer reviews throughout the internet, I can assure you that these models are the best food processors available right now.
3. Different Types of Food Processors
Depending upon the capacity or power of the food processor, these can be broadly classified into the following two types:
- Full-Size Food Processor
- Mini Food Processor
Full-Size Food Processors are the ones with high power, high capacity, and more number of functions. So if you are planning to use your food processor for a variety of different tasks like chopping, kneading dough, grating, blending, etc. then you should opt for a full-size food processor.
Other than the different tasks, if you need to process large amounts of food, then you should opt for this type of food processor.
Mini Food Processors are typically smaller in size, power, and capacity and have less number of functions. If you just need a food processor to chop less quantity of vegetables, meat, etc. and don’t need to perform various tasks, then you should opt for a mini food processor.
As you might have guessed by now, that the primary function of a mini food processor is chopping, and so most of the models of mini food processors are choppers.
So before going out to find the best food processor, first decide on what you need it for. Depending upon your needs, decide on which type of food processor to buy.
Both of these types of food processors come at different price points, which is also a factor in your buying decision. Read our food processor buying guide for more information on the factors to be considered before buying a food processor.
4. Full-Size Food Processor versus Mini Food Processor
While the names may be similar, the functions of these two types of food processors are very different.
A full-size food processor is a heavy-duty appliance that has a higher starting price point than a mini food processor.
A full-size food processor is more extensive and better designed for chefs who enjoy baking and cooking with the dough as it contains a giant mixing bowl and a bigger blade. Typically, this type of food processor has a removable lid that is transparent so you can easily see the food as it is chopped, kneaded, ground, etc.
If you are simply looking for a compact appliance that can chop through small quantities of vegetables or meat, then a mini food processor is an ideal processor for you.
A mini food processor uses a plastic mixing bowl with several metal blades on the inside to process food. The average capacity of a mini food processor’s mixing bowl is between one and three cups.
Therefore, if you are looking for help with routine cooking tasks at a low price, then purchasing a mini food processor is the best option.
5. How to Choose Between a Full Size Food Processor and Mini Food Processor
There is a vastly different in size between a full size food processor and a mini food processor.
As the name implies, a mini food processor is compact, light and can easily fit into any size kitchen. A typical mini food processor weighs about 1KG and takes up minimal space on the counter and in the cabinet. However, a full-size food processor can weigh as much as 10KG and has significantly more substantial dimensions.
Purchasing a full-size food processor will require additional thought for storage and placement of the device after you buy it.
Furthermore, many mini food processors have sleek designs that match well with any style of kitchen. On the other hand, many full-size food processors are bulkier and not as design-friendly.
This is probably the most crucial consideration when choosing between a full size food processor and a mini food processor.
A full-size food processor includes a giant mixing bowl and additional functions like grating and blending as opposed to a mini food processor.
Also, a full size food processor has a capacity of approximately 9-10 cups while a mini food processor typically has a capacity of 1-3 cups.
Therefore, a full size food processor is best for someone who cooks for more number of people or needs to process a variety of different food items in large quantities. In contrast, a mini food processor is the best option for someone who cooks for only 2-3 people and does not need to process a variety of different food items in large quantities.
Both types of food processors come with components that are dishwasher safe. However, the elements of a full size food processor may not fit in every dishwasher.
Both types of food processors include additional accessories for kneading dough, whipping liquids, and grating cheese. Unfortunately, mini food processors do not usually come with these accessories, and users will either have to pay an additional cost for them or buy a full size food processor.
The full size food processor effortlessly pulverizes food as it has multiple speeds and other functions to control the food processing. While a mini food processor usually comes with only a single or couple of speed settings and thus may not be able to process the food as per your liking.
If price alone is the deciding factor in purchasing one of these appliances, then a mini food processor is significantly less expensive.
Typically, a mini chopper ranges in price from 800 rs to 1500, while a full-size food processor is significantly more expensive at a price point between 1200 rs to 5000 rs.
There is an overlap in price between both products, however, before purchasing an inexpensive full size food processor because it comes at the same cost as a mini food processor, remember that you get what you pay for. The cheap full size food processor is going to lack features and durability which you may otherwise get in a higher-priced food processor.
Both of these types of food processors are durable, as many of the parts are plastic.
Moreover, almost all of the mini and full-size food processors available today come with manufacturer’s warranties to cover the appliance if any components break or fail.
So do not be under the impression that more expensive food processors are the most durable.
6. Additional Accessories:-
Usually, full-size food processors come with a more extensive assortment of accessories. Some of these other components include milkshake attachments, thicker/thinner/smaller blades, whisks, etc.
While mini food processors do not come with more accessories, but some of them do have the option of adding additional fittings if needed.
Choosing between a full size food processor and a mini food processor ultimately comes down to what you plan to use it for.
If simply chopping small quantities of food is all you need than invest in a mini food processor. However, if baking is your passion or you cook for more number of people than a full-size food processor is your best option.
With so many options available today, once you narrow down which type of food processor you need, picking one will be an easy task. Refer our food processor comparison guide to figure out which brand of a food processor will be best suited for your needs.
6. Food Processor Attachments and Accessories
Does your food processor come with various attachments and accessories? Make use of them to get the most out of your food processor. Here’s a list of food processor attachments and accessories you might be interested in using, and you can always buy them separately as long as they fit with your food processor model.
Every food processor has this blade to shred, cut, slice, and grind food. It has two blades on opposite sides of the center shaft, and they curve towards different directions to make an S shape. Metal blades are better than plastic ones because they stay sharp and last longer.
Dough hook or dough blade
It looks like the S-blade but with straighter metal or plastic blades. Mixes dough for bread.
2. Egg whip
The one with large paddles at the end of two straight arms. This is used for beating eggs, but I don’t use it because the healthy whisked egg for cooking can quickly be done by hand with an egg whisk without going into all the trouble of washing the food processor. In contrast, the beaten eggs for baking cakes should be done with a mixer, which will give better results. Maybe one can use this attachment for whipping egg whites for small size desserts like mousses.
3. Julienne disc
The metal disc with a row of narrow teeth that can cut food into long and thin strips.
4. French fry disc
The metal disc that looks like the Julienne disc but with larger teeth that cuts food into fatter pieces.
5. Citrus juicer
A dome-like attachment to fit on the shaft and juices citrus fruit like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit while it turns on the shaft.
6. Non-citrus juicer
Lets you juice fruits or vegetables by feeding through the feed tube. The juice is strained to the bottom of the bowl while the pulp is kept in the middle.
7. Extra bowls
To alternate between tasks if you don’t want to wash the bowl each time.
For scraping the sides of the bowl.
7. Differences Between Food Processor And Blender
There is some confusion out there that people think food processor and blender are the same things. Indeed they are not!
Blender is designed to blend or mix soft food, liquids and any substance containing a lot of liquid (smoothies, shakes, soups, sauce, salad dressing, etc.) Anything solid can be a challenge to work with a blender. It always needs liquid to work efficiently. You can quickly leave veggies or frozen fruits in a food processor without any cash. But with mixer, you need to mix with juice as water, milk, yogurt, etc. to puree properly.
Food Processor is much more versatile and able to deal with non-solid, more substantial food. Food processor functions to chop, shred, grate, slice, or mix. One thing you may haven’t know is you can make frozen desserts with a food processor (yes, you don’t need an ice-cream maker for that!)
How to find the food processor that meets your needs?
The best isn’t necessarily the most expensive. It should be the one that fits your purpose of usage and your budget the most. Below is the list of essential features you should consider when choosing a food processor for your kitchen:
As seen in the upper comparison chart, food processors come with so many different sizes, from the small 3-cup bowl to the large 20-cup bowl versions. The small size is normally limited to a chopping function. Thus it’s good for small jobs such as chopping herbs/nuts, making sauce, mincing garlic in small quantities. A full-functioned food processor is more versatile with varieties of tasks (slice, dice, chop, shred, grate, zest, mash, mix, puree, knead, grind and emulsify) – which can function well in a restaurant kitchen. For the average home cook, a medium size of 9-14 cups is recommended.
Note: Feed-tube size is also worth considering. A wide feed-tube saves you time from cutting significant ingredients into small pieces.
A full-functioned food processor is usually hefty, with over- 20-pound weight since it contains a strong motor and a big bowl that fits a significant amount of ingredients. A small-sized chopper is light with less than 3-pound weight, which is handy to move around and easily store.
The power of the engine is measure by wattage. The higher the wattage, the more massive load of food the food processor can tackle. The motor is the central core of a food processor since it does the most difficult and important job. For a home cook, the wattage of over 600 is recommended for the best use. If you care about the warranty, the reputational Cuisinart has a 10-year motor warranty on most of their food processors – which is a very generous period for a machinery warranty. More impressively, Breville BFP800XL Sous Chef has a 1200-watt motor warranty of up to 25 years. This machine is what I call a Beast.
This is an issue buyers frequently forget about. Some food processors make a loud noise that is very frustrating to use. Moms cannot cook when their kids are sleeping just because of this problem. But this feature isn’t commonly mentioned in the user’s guide. Thus, I’ve gone through the user’s comments on food processors’ noise and combine them into the upper comparison chart.
8. How to Clean a Food Processor Fast
I’ve gone through it, washing a food processor means taking apart everything, then soaking and cleaning each part under the sink, and then putting them back together, and it takes ages to do. I didn’t like to use the dishwasher for it because that takes a long time as well, and it’s not like I’m only using the food processor once a day. So I’ve devised two quick and easy ways to clean a food processor.
One is for cleaning after processing the usual food like meat, veggies, and so on, while the other is for nut kinds of butter.
After the Usual Food
What you need: Two small tubs, dish detergent or mild soap, dishcloth or sponge.
1. As soon as you’ve finished using the food processor, don’t let it sit around. Immediately take apart all the removable parts (except the base) and place them in a small tub. The pieces should be placed loosely and not stacked together too much.
2. Take the tub to the bathroom or garden hose and hose down the parts with a strong spray of water to get rid of loose food residue. Try to lose as much waste as possible.
3. Move the now less dirty food processor parts into another clean tub. Drain the original container and fill it with clean water.
4. Use the dishcloth or sponge to rub through each part with dish detergent or soap. Be careful with the blades.
5. Once you’re done, pour the clean water from the first tub into this tub. The rush of a large amount of water will be able to wash away the rest of the dirt and partly rinse the food processor parts.
6. In the end, just drain away all water and rinse the parts clean of any detergent or soap.
7. Dry the pieces with a clean towel or let them air dry if you are not using the food processor immediately afterward.
After Nut Butters
What you need: Paper towel, dish detergent or mild soap, dishcloth or sponge.
1. Again, clean the food processor immediately after use. Remove all the parts from the base which needed to be cleaned.
2. Use a paper towel (or two) to wipe the parts clean of nut butter. Remove as much residue as possible.
3. Use the dishcloth or sponge to rub through each part with dish detergent or soap. Be careful with the blades.
4. Rinse the parts clean of detergent or soap. If any of the pieces are still dirty, repeat with step 3 and 4.
5. Dry the elements with a clean towel or let them air dry if you are not using the food processor immediately afterward.
The base cannot be submerged in or poured with water. Just wipe it down with a wet cloth. If there are stubborn stains, use baking soda paste. But there shouldn’t be stubborn stains if you clean your food processor after each use.
